When I was about eight years old, my father brought home a special issue of National Geographic. The cover featured a young woman from Afghanistan and I was immediately captivated by her piercing green eyes. I couldn't stop looking at the photo and it filled me with wonder and curiosity about the girl and the photographer who took the photo. I think that was the moment that my interest in photography was born.
Over the years, I never forgot that photograph and remained interested in the photographer who took it, Steve McCurry.
It's amazing that almost 40 years later, thanks to Artika Books I had the opportunity to photograph Steve. Life has a way of coming full circle, and it's a beautiful thing when it does.
